NORTH AMERICAN VASA 2022 // TRAVERSE CITY MICHIGAN // WINTER SPORTS RACES

The first time I put on skate skis back in 2014 I barely knew what freestyle nordic skiing was. I had recently moved back home to Michigan after living in Northern California for a few years and I was excited to get back into Winter sports on a more regular basis. That first excursion on a borrowed pair of skis at Hanson Hills with my mom was my very first taste of something that would completely change how I experience Northern Michigan winters. While others complain about the cold and the first snows of the season I cheer it on and absolutely can’t wait to get out on the trails. Skiing has 100% changed my perception of Winter and I adore being surrounded by other people who are also in love with Winter weather... The challenges, the quiet, the beauty, the grit, and the unique opportunity to glide, roll, power, and - let’s face it - suffer a bit, along trails that have been lovingly groomed through the woods. For many years I wasn’t even sure that I had any interest in signing up for a formal race. Skiing around others was intimidating (and still can be!) to me. It was a long time coming, but I participated in my first VASA race this past weekend, the 15k freestyle. It was painful, it was beautiful, and it was awesome to feel the energy of such a cool community. As someone who still feels very much like a newbie in this setting, I have to say, I felt a tremendous amount of support. While I was out on the course, I volunteered my wonderful husband to take some photos of the festivities. When I had recovered and changed into dry, warm, clothes I joined him and had a blast capturing the newcomers, the veterans, and - hopefully - the spirit of an incredible weekend. I’m very proud to live and play in Traverse City. This really is a special place. Cheers!
